Solein is a source of protein that is 100 times more environmentally sustainable than animal and plant-based alternatives. It is made from water, carbon dioxide, nutrients and vitamins, and renewable energy. Can it become the go-to food source for all of us?
Solein was developed by Solar Foods and launched in 2021. It was designed to be safe, environmentally friendly and delicious. Foodtank recognized the founder and CEO, Pasi Vainikka, as one of the top 25 Food and Agriculture Leaders to Watch in 2019. Vainikka applies his background in renewable energy to innovative protein production. Solar Foods has just opened its first factory in Vantaa, Finland, which started production in spring 2024.
Solein grows using a special type of microbe that feeds on air (carbon dioxide) and hydrogen. Adding a broth of nitrogen, minerals and other nutrients, the microbes multiply and can be separated from the liquid through centrifugation. What is left from this process is then dried into a fine powder that’s 60–70% protein. This can be turned into flakes or chunks to mimic the shape of meats. Solein easily integrates into whatever it is mixed with, which makes it ideal for a wide variety of foods.
In addition to being high in protein, Solein is free of gluten, dairy and soy. It’s vegan, lacking in known allergens and, based on Solar Foods’ claims, contains all the nine essential amino acids, carbohydrates, fats and minerals found in other foods.
Solar Foods has already gained regulatory approval for Solein in Singapore and has applied for approval in the EU, UK and US. It is still early, but Solein could prove to be an excellent source of protein and other nutrients.
